The graph illustrates the results of a recent survey conducted among schools in relation to what new languages they would like to introduce as part of the new Junior Cycle. As you can see most schools are interested in providing a short course in Chinese, which is being prepared by the NCCA. We are working on the next most popular four languages, Irish Sign Language, Polish, Russian, and Japanese, and will look at further courses when these have been completed. There is some interest in providing short courses in some of the most spoken languages in Ireland (such as Polish, Lithuanian and Romanian) as home language courses and we are also exploring how we can best respond to this need. Obviously, there will be some challenges in relation to implementation of new short courses such as existing teacher capacity and/or the ability of schools to access expertise from outside.
