AssessmentRSS

'Assessment is the process of generating, gathering, recording, interpreting, using and reporting evidence of learning in individuals, groups or systems, which relies upon a number of instruments, one of which may be a test'. NCCA, Assessment Overview (www.ncca.ie) 'Assessment is that part of the learning process where the learner and the teacher can evaluate progress or achievement in the development of a particular skill, or in the understanding of a particular area of knowledge.' NCCA, Curriculum and Assessment (www.ncca.ie)

A distinction is made between between Assessment for Learning (AfL), or formative assessment, and Assessment of Learning (AoL), or summative assessment, typically tests and exams. The latter type of assessment may appear to dominate but both types of assessments supplement each other and their respective roles and features need to be distinguished.

The NCCA provides some general information on Assessment for Learning in an Leaflet for Teachers as well as some further information on AfL - Key Principles and strategies (www.ncca.ie). See examples of AfL specific to the Modern Language classroom in the examples below.
